Mustaches have always held a prominent spot in the sports world, in part as a way athletes and coaches to flex their masculinity. Many dedicated and casual fans alike can agree that a player’s mustache is typically just as iconic as the player himself. Many of the athletes and coaches on this list would be unrecognizable without their famous lip caterpillars.
With so many professional sports leagues and players across the globe, it can be difficult to distinguish which stache rules among them all. This list is the best sports mustaches broken down by each major professional sports league, in no specific order.
BEST MUSTACHES IN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS HISTORY
NFL – ANDY REID
It would be extremely difficult to imagine Andy Reid without his famous mustache. Reid has been coaching football since the early 1980s, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find an image of him without his glorious stache. The stache has become a part of Andy Reid’s persona and is the best mustache in the NFL.
NASCAR – dALE eARNHARDT
A mustache doesn’t have to necessarily be flashy in order for it to be considered legendary. Earnhardt rocked an iconic dad mustache while flying around a racetrack at 200 mph. Any high schooler picking up his date would be nervous to see this man standing at the doorway.
NHL – lANNY mCdONALD
I would be surprised if this mustache didn’t have its own area code with how much square footage it takes up on McDonald’s face.
CFB – AAron feld
While he might not be a college football player, the Oregon football strength and conditioning coach steals the show whenever he is on camera. His intimidating physique, Peaky Blinders mustache, and explosive personality makes Feld a force to be reckoned with. Not many men have the ability to style a mustache, let alone as well as Feld styles his.
NBA – lARRY bIRD
Larry Bird’s mustache makes this list solely due to how humiliating it must have been for opposing players to lose to a man night after night who could barely even grow facial hair. Unlike many lip caterpillars on this list, there is nothing good to say about this stache. Bird’s stache earned its respect by averaging a double-double and hitting game-winners on a weekly basis.
WWE – hULK HOGAN
Not many individuals can rock a mustache of this caliber while still being considered a respectable human being. Hulk Hogan has gone his entire professional wrestling career sporting this iconic horseshoe stache. This stache has become a staple of who Hulk Hogan is, and it’s hard to imagine him without it.
MLB – rOLLIE fINGERS
If you were to look up the definition of a handlebar mustache in the dictionary, this image would appear next to it. Rollie Fingers played professional baseball from the late 1960s to the mid 1980s. If you didn’t know who Rollie Fingers was before this article, I can promise you that you won’t forget the name, or the stache, moving forward.
Soccer – Vicente Del Bosque
This mustache screams 1970s European masculinity. The lifeless eyes, mangled flowing hair, and pristine mustache results in what can only be described as the ideal manly man.
PLL – jAKE bERNHARDT
The lacrosse community has been graced with some gorgeous mustaches over the years, but none of them compare to the great Jake Bernhardt’s stache. This is one of the most thick yet well-kept mustaches that I have ever seen. Bernhardt should enter the modeling industry for his stache alone.
F1 – Nigel Mansell
Nigel Mansell’s mustache is much more approachable than other mustaches found on this list. It isn’t aggressive nor is it flashy, but I would consider it nurturing. Nigel Mansell looks like a respectable human being who would help fix my flat tire if I was stranded on the side of the road.
